back in Delhi

Hi! We got back from Udaipur/Chittorgarh on Sunday morning. I'm working on my Udaipur post (and I have about a million pictures) but until then, here are a few things I've been meaning to repost:

1. This is an article about an expat living in Mumbai. I came across it last Fall, and read it a few times, but I really can't say I understood the emotions it tries to convey until I spent some time here... and it nails the feeling perfectly. I didn't want to share it with my parents at first because I didn't want to scare them, but since I've now told them stories about cockroaches, I think they can handle it. "She's a strange beast, this India. She hugs me, so tightly sometimes that I can't breathe, then she turns and punches me hard in the face, leaving me stunned. Then she hugs me again, and suddenly I know everything will be all right."

2. A Poem written my Ms. Caroline Olstad, in memory of the time most of us have lost to worshipping the porcelain goddess:

"The poem I wrote to cheer everyone up about being sick:

Eating bananas and rice with a Pepto on top,
We knew India would be warm, but now it's getting real hot.

We all get sick but you hope to never see the day,
Now your stomach's speaking in that gurgley way.

Puking on the bus, poop behind a tree,
Is that rainbow diarrhea? Can it really be?!

When you don't feel as sexy as Shelia, don't stress,
Just talk to Hannah, she'll provide the ORS.

The heat, street food, our Hindi test,
Whatever made you sick is really a pest.

If you want to practice snot rockets, it's not an issue,
And remember you can use your dupatta as a tissue!

A scale of 1-10, water to bricks is,
It's no secret, we all know each other's business.

These are the things we don't blog about,
but it's part of the adventure, without a doubt.

So if you're "bīmāra" and you feel like hell,
Just laugh it off and remember "All izz Well"

3. An anecdote... maybe this is too much information, but a bunch of us had our legs waxed/eyebrows threaded at a local salon today because it is just so incredibly cheap here... However, I was charged more because I had "much more leg to wax." While this meant I paid Rs 220 ($5 - for everything - the same thing would cost around $70 in the States) instead of Rs 170 ($3.50)... the height discrimination... ouuuuch. ;)

More soon!
love,
laura
